Coconut oil has certainly gotten a lot of publicity in recent years, and rightfully so. It does have some pretty incredible health benefits, not only for inside your body, but for topical uses such as sun burns, skin irritations, and even for your hair. But when it relates to ketones and helping you achieve ketosis, that’s a different thing to consider.
Coconut oil includes a lipid (or fat) called MCT, which stands for “medium-chain triglyceride.” This essentially means that this type of fat is glycerol-based and has a chain of carbon molecules connected to it. Medium-chain triglyceride means is contains somewhere between six to 12 carbon molecules. A long-chain triglyceride would have 12, 13 or more carbon molecules.
MCTs can be very powerful energy sources because they can penetrate the intestinal wall and convert into energy pretty quickly. So, coconut oil is a percentage of MCTs, but it matters what “chain” we are talking about. There is C-6, C-8, C-10 and C-12, for example. C-8 is probably the most pure, in other words, pure MCTs with a C-8 chain. Most coconut oils, especially ones of lower quality, are not as pure with MCTs as KETO//OS.
Also, if you compare KETO//OS and coconut oil as an energy source that will put ketones in your body, you have to consider the amount of coconut oil you would have to take in order to match the ketone level a serving of KETO//OS produces. First of all, KETO//OS includes beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is a type of ketone, plus MCT powder. With those two powerful ingredients, KETO//OS can put you into a state of ketosis within an hour. And it can do it on one serving of 110 calories.
Coconut oil is not pure MCT, and not all coconut oil has the same MCT carbon chain. Plus, to accomplish what KETO//OS does in one serving, it would take several servings of pure, very high-quality coconut oil. This would equal many, many more calories and cost a lot more than one serving of KETO//OS. Just one tablespoon of coconut oil has about 115-130 calories. Plus, who would want to pound down scoop after scoop of coconut oil? That would upset your stomach pretty severely.
