OK, so I decided to jump into my second 60-hour water wash and ketone reboot. I was really interested in seeing how my body (and mind) would react compared to my first.
This 60-hour wash takes place every four to six weeks in a group of more than 14,000 people. The support group lives on Facebook.
How does it work? You fast for 60 hours, consuming nothing but water and exogenous ketones. I began at 7:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, Oct. 1. That’s when I ate my final meal for 60 hours. I ended at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4. If you’d like to read about my experience the first time I attempted this, click here.
Why am I doing this? I’m always interested in how my body reacts to changes I make in diet and exercise. Plus, it helps to just give my digestive system a rest, detox and reset things.
Why 60 hours? Here is an answer from the group admins, who are FAR more experienced at this stuff than I am:
“On average, the average person needs to spend roughly 2000 kcal of muscle and liver glycogen AFTER depleting existing blood glucose levels. Depending on the person, this can takefrom 36-48 hours. So just when you are about to hit the “shift in metabolic energy substrates” (move from sugar burning to fat burning) you break the fast at 48hrs and never experience the true “experience” of autophagy(cell regeneration).
“60 – 84 hrs is grounded by science as effective and safe every 4-6 weeks. However anything over 84 is considered medical therapy and should be done under medical supervision.
One of the biggest reasons is that not eating for 60 hours really opens your eyes to how you think about food. There are so many psychological triggers we have about food. This forces you to pay attention to those triggers and is awesome for helping you identify why and when you eat, even if you’re not really hungry.”
So, here is a journal of what I experienced on my second 60-hour water wash and ketone reboot:
Sunday, Oct. 1
7:30 p.m. (0 hours)
Soooo, my last meal or food of any kind fort he next 60 hours… Whhheeeeeee!
I had some fajita beef and chicken with some peppers, onions and whole-grain rice.
This time I prepped a little better leading up to the water wash/ketone reboot. I didn’t eat as much bad food, and had no alcohol of any kind for three days before. i also did not drink as much caffeine as I normally do.
One big lesson I learned the first time I did this was to not shock my body so much. So, I really tried to cut back on sugar, simple carbs and caffeine.
11:00 p.m. (3 1/2 hours in)
Headed to bed felling fine. Have my water and ketones ready to go for tomorrow! my plan is to take three servings of ketones throughout the day and drink about 100-120 oz of water each day. The exogenous ketones I’m using is KETO//OS MAX – both Maui Punch and Raspberry Lemonade flavor. Two servings have some caffeine, so I’ll take those in the morning and around noon, saving the non-caffeine version for later in the day.
Monday, Oct. 2
9:00 a.m. (13 1/2 hours in)
The good thing about eating your last meal at night is that you sleep for most of the first 24 hours! I usually don’t eat until around 11:00 a.m. anyway. I had my first serving of ketones just mixed with water and ice.
I don’t think I could have made it the first time without the ketone energy. Ketones are used as an actual fuel source, and don’t require insulin to get into your cells. Each serving has 40 calories.
3:30 p.m. (20 hours in)
Starting to get pretty hungry, but it’s not bothering me too much. I’ve had two servings of ketones. Energy level is still high.
I went for a run at about 9:30 to help burn off some energy from the previous meals. One of the big goals of this is to shift your body to a fat-burning mode.
9:30 p.m. (26 hours in)
It was right about the 24-hour mark the first time I attempted this that I was at my worst. I got a dual detox headache and threw up a little. After that I felt fine and slept great. Again, you can read about my first water wash experience here.
I fell much better at the same point this time. No headache. I’m hungry but it’s not too bad.
I had my third ketone drink at 6:30. The ketones definitely help with energy level and mental clarity.
Tuesday, Oct. 3
10:30 a.m. (39 hours in)
I slept fine last night. Seemed to be more of a deeper sleep. I don’t remember moving much.
I went to the gym this morning just to jump on the treadmill for a while.
2:30 p.m. (43 hours in)
43 hours without food. So far this time water wash and ketone reboot has been easier than the first. I’m a little low on energy after the ketones wear off.
I’ve had a lot of work to do today, so that has taken my mind off food. Since I work from home, it would be pretty easy to grab something to eat.
I can’t say that I haven’t opened the pantry a couple times just out of habit. That’s another thing this does–it helps you identify your habits related to food. The stuff you do without even thinking about it.
5:30 p.m. (46 hours in)
Family is eating dinner. I’m not.
7:30 p.m. (48 hours in)
One of the coolest things about not eating for two and a half days is just knowing you can do it. It is almost 100 percent mental. If you can make it through 60 hours, you can also not eat that ice cream. Or that cake.
I’ve been very present to how my body reacts. It teaches you a lot about how you treat food. When and why you eat matters.
Your body has fuel. It will be OK. So, with just 12 hours to go, I know I’m in the home stretch. I’m going to be asleep for most of the next 12 hours.
Wednesday, Oct. 4
9:00 a.m. (61 1/2 hours in)
After taking the kids to school, I scrambled two eggs and drank some chicken bone broth. Best eggs I’ve ever had!
I slept fine last night. I was little run down this morning, but overall I felt very calm, clean and light.
A huge benefit to resting your digestive system for 60 hours is reduced bloating, reduced inflammation and just allowing your body to detox. It leaves you feeling very much at ease.
Overall this second water wash and ketone cleanse was easier than the first. I’m amazed at how I feel not eating anything for two and a half days. You learn a lot about yourself doing this.
It is 100% worth it!
